Dear Mr. Barefield,
Hello, my name is Justin Laskos, though I prefer to be called Jp, I am 17 and I am in the 11th grade. I am writing this letter to learn more about the Film Industry and noticed you live in L.A. and that you would know about some of it.
First I would like to tell a couple things about me. My favorite school subject is Video Productions because I love creating videos and new packages for the video announcements for everyone in the school to see. I also love working on the high-tech computers. Though, my least favorite and difficult class has to be Pre-Calculus because I find it hard to understand some of the formulas used to find the answer to a problem. With these things in mind for working on videos and stuff I would like to go to Specs Howard or any type of film school that can help me better my skills at it. With the things I do, I hope to become a Big Screen writer someday and see my movies in the theaters.
Some person things about me, like my family for example, help me with my career path. I have my mom, dad, a brother, and a sister. I love reading and love playing games online on the computer with people around the world making new friends. My favorite types of movies are fantasy and an action movie, my favorite type of music is Alternative, and my favorite types of books to read are Manga.
I also want to learn some things from you like what are some good things I can do to do better in high school? Preparing for college? Becoming a Film Producer? What are your hobbies and interests? Also, why did you decide to take part in this mentor program?
I hope that you can help me with some or most of my questions here in the mentor program and I hope to hear from you soon.
Sincerely,
Justin “Jp” Laskos

Jp-
Thanks for the letter. I think its very much like my cousin Rory to cook up something like this. And they always lead to good places. First, I should tell you that while I currently live in L.A., I'm not that connected to the film industry -- or, "The Industry" -- as they call it here. I do know its a hard one, and its runs the town. I also know that no one ever succeeded withouth trying, so you should follow that dream as long as it will go, especially with a supportive family. One thing I hear constantly from the filmmaker side of things, is that it CAN be learned. And it sounds like you've got a leg up there.
I'd add my own comments that apply to everything from a successful career in film to finishing high school in a good way. It took me until I was thirty to learn this, so listen up. GET A CALENDAR. PUT ALL DUE DATES IN IT. PUT WHAT YOU DID THAT DAY IN IT. AND GET A TO DO LIST AND KEEP IT CURRENT. It helped me more than anything to get those two things down.
As for me, I'm just finishing up a stint as "Interim Executive Director" of a nonprofit called Center for Health Justice that deals with HIV in prisons and jails. It's a relatively new organization, and their website is quite rough. You can check it out at www.healthjustice.net. As of January 1, they'll have a permanent executive director and I'll be looking for more nonprofit consulting work. Before Center for Health Justice, I was executive director of AIDS Research Alliance of America for five years (www.aidsresearch.org). And you can find out more about me at my online resume: managedchaos.com. (That should work anyway.) I do know several people who make money -- from a little to a lot -- in film, and can pass questions along their way without any problem.
And I'm honored you chose me. I'm looking forward to getting to know you. Oh, you're now part of my "network" so if you ever need a facvor, just ask.
Take care,
-irl
